Ingredient
Damiana in Protoflow: 200 mg a Serving
Damiana is a shrub from Mexico and Central America whose leaves are sold as a tonic, and Protoflow lists 200 mg per serving. Memorial Sloan Kettering reports limited evidence of its stimulant effects, animal signs of blood sugar lowering and no human prostate trial.

The plant01
What is damiana?
Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is a small aromatic shrub from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and its leaves are brewed as tea or packed into capsules as a traditional tonic.
The Protoflow label lists "Damiana", 200 mg, line 3 of the plant lines, with no Daily Value. The sales page names it without an amount. The same weight, 200 mg, is given to muira puama, so the panel treats the two as a pair of traditional tonics.
Traditionally the leaf is used as a mild stimulant and as a so-called aphrodisiac. The label does not state the part of the plant, an extract ratio or a standardized marker, so the 200 mg could be little more than dried leaf powder.

| Amount used in research | No human dose established |
| Strength of evidence | Limited; animal studies and one multi-ingredient product study |

Evidence02
Is there evidence that damiana works?
Memorial Sloan Kettering says there is "limited evidence of Damiana's stimulant effects", and the sexual-function evidence comes from one small study of a multi-ingredient product (MSK, Damiana).
That detail matters. When a trial tests a blend, any effect cannot be pinned on one plant. The damiana in that study sat alongside other ingredients, so the study says little about damiana alone.
Nothing in the research connects damiana to prostate size, urine flow or night-time trips. We found no trial for any of them. Like several lines on the panel, damiana is a traditional tonic whose place in a product named for flow comes from marketing, not from a measured result.
Blood sugar03
Does damiana lower blood sugar?
Animal studies suggest it might, and MSK notes there are no human trials of that effect (MSK, Damiana).
This is a reason for people with diabetes to take extra care with any herb. If a plant can lower blood sugar, it could add to a diabetes medicine and push levels lower than planned. Whether damiana at 200 mg does so in people is unknown. Two other lines on the panel have similar questions: tribulus may have additive blood sugar lowering effects (MSK, Tribulus terrestris), while niacin at high doses can raise blood glucose (NIH ODS, Niacin).
Diabetes is also a common cause of passing urine more often and at night, so a man with those symptoms and diabetes has two good reasons to talk to a clinician before trying any supplement. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.
At a glance04
What does the damiana line tell you and not tell you?
It tells you a weight; it does not tell you the plant part, the extract, the quality or the effect.
| Point | Known | Not known |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | 200 mg a serving | Plant part or extract ratio |
| Stimulant effect | Limited evidence (MSK, Damiana) | Effect of 200 mg |

| Prostate or urinary flow | No trial found | Any effect |
| Side effects | None listed by MSK | Interactions with medicines |

Where does damiana come from and how is it used?
Damiana grows wild in warm, dry parts of the Americas, and the leaves are harvested, dried and sold whole, ground or as liquid extracts.
Traditional use in Mexico and nearby regions included teas and tinctures, often described as lifting mood and energy. Modern supplements move the leaf into capsules, often alongside other tonic herbs. That is the case here: damiana shares the panel with muira puama, epimedium, tribulus and catuaba, a group whose shared story is vitality.
The step from "traditional tonic" to "prostate support" is the part with no evidence. Damiana is not a prostate herb in any tradition we found, and the sales page does not claim it is. It simply appears in a formula that is sold for the prostate.
It helps to see what a fair label would tell you. A better label would give the plant part, the extract ratio and a marker compound, and it would state the amount for each capsule. Protoflow's gives a weight per serving and nothing more. We list the 200 mg, we report that it is not standardized on the label, and we leave the rest to the maker.
Quality is the other open question. Herbs can be mixed up, diluted or contaminated, and a supplement does not need FDA approval before sale (FDA, Information for Consumers on Supplements). The lot number and certificate reference on the page are seller references, not proof of a lab test, which is why we do not treat them as one. You can read more on the testing and quality page.
In practice, a man who likes herbal tea and wants to try damiana as a tea would be buying a known quantity of leaf, in a form that is easy to stop. A capsule in a 14-line blend gives no such control, because if something disagrees with you, you cannot tell which line did it.
Asking first06
Who should check with a doctor before taking damiana?
Men who take diabetes medicine or insulin should check with a doctor or pharmacist before using a formula with damiana in it.
The MSK page has no section on adverse reactions or drug interactions (MSK, Damiana), which tells you less about safety than it sounds. A missing section means missing data, not a clean record. The sensible stance is caution, and the label's own instruction to consult a physician if you take any medication fits.
If you track your blood sugar at home, tell your clinician before you start and note any change in your readings afterwards. Our muira puama page covers the other 200 mg line.
FAQ07
Damiana in Protoflow: questions answered
How much damiana is in Protoflow?
The label lists 200 mg of damiana per serving of two capsules, line 3 of the plant lines, and gives no plant part, extract ratio or Daily Value. Muira puama has the same weight.
Is damiana an aphrodisiac?
It is traditionally sold as one. Memorial Sloan Kettering says evidence of its stimulant effects is limited, and the sexual-function evidence comes from a small study of a multi-ingredient product.
Can damiana affect blood sugar?
Animal studies suggest blood-sugar-lowering effects, and there are no human trials of that. If you take diabetes medicine, ask your doctor before using it.
Does damiana help the prostate?
We found no trial of damiana for the prostate or urinary flow. Its place in a prostate formula rests on tradition and marketing, not on a measured result.
Is damiana safe long term?
There is no long-term safety data in the sources we read, and the MSK page has no adverse-reactions section. Packs run for up to six months, so ask a doctor if you plan that long.
Does the sales page name damiana?
Yes, it is one of eight herbs the sales page names, but it prints no amounts. The label is the only place that shows the 200 mg figure.
