Protoflow Supplement Dosage With Food, Water and Other Pills

Quick answer

The label says two capsules daily with water, and gives no rule about food. A small meal may reduce stomach upset from niacin and herbs. Take the capsules with a full glass of water, avoid large amounts of alcohol, and ask a pharmacist how to space them from your other pills.

Water01

Why does the label say with water?

Water helps gelatin capsules go down and keeps them from lodging in the throat.

A full glass is a sensible amount. A very large drink just before bed could add a night trip to the toilet, which would muddy a diary of night-time urination. The label does not specify a volume, so use a normal glass and keep it the same each day. Avoid taking the capsules dry.

Food02

Should you take the capsules with a meal?

The label allows either, and a small meal is the gentler choice for most people.

Niacin can cause flushing and an upset stomach, and cayenne can irritate a sensitive stomach (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)). Food slows absorption a little and cushions both. If you flush badly on an empty stomach, try a snack with the capsules. Do not, however, change the dose to fix it, and do not combine it with a very heavy meal.

Other pills04

Can you take it with your usual pills?

Often yes, but the label tells you to consult a physician first if you take any medication, so ask.

The risks are not about stomach timing. They are about what the herbs and vitamins do in the body, such as effects on bleeding, blood pressure and blood sugar (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely). A pharmacist can check each prescription in a few minutes. Bring the bottle and the Supplement Facts panel.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Never drop a treatment for this. Ask before adding any supplement to a regimen.

Vitamins05

What about a multivitamin or a B-complex?

Check the niacin and vitamin E totals, since each of those may already be in your multivitamin.

Protoflow already gives 75 mg of niacin, above the 35 mg upper limit (NIH ODS, Niacin). A B-complex can add 20 to 100 mg more. Vitamin E from a multivitamin plus a separate capsule can pile up too. Add the numbers on a sheet of paper and show it to your pharmacist before you combine products.

Caffeine and alcohol06

What about coffee, tea and alcohol?

They can irritate the bladder and disturb sleep, so they cloud any test of a prostate-related product.

NIDDK lists caffeine and alcohol among things that can worsen urinary symptoms (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)). Alcohol also widens blood vessels and can deepen a niacin flush. If you want a clean test, keep your usual intake steady and note it in the diary, or cut back in the evening on the advice of your doctor.

Grapefruit07

Does grapefruit matter?

The label says nothing about it, but grapefruit alters how the body handles some medicines, so ask your pharmacist.

That is a general rule for many prescriptions, not a finding about Protoflow. If you take a statin or a blood pressure medicine, you may already be told to limit grapefruit. We mention it because a supplement adds to the list of things to check, and because a short question at the pharmacy counter costs nothing.

Bottom line08

What is the bottom line on food and other pills?

Take two capsules with a normal glass of water, preferably with a small meal, at a steady time.

Then ask a pharmacist about everything else you take.

FAQ09

Questions on this topic

Can I take Protoflow without food?

The label allows it. If you get flushing or nausea, try a small meal with the capsules.

Does milk change how Protoflow works?

The label says nothing about milk. Water is what it names, so use water.

Can I mix the capsules into a drink?

The label gives no such direction. Capsules are meant to be swallowed whole with water.

Is Protoflow okay alongside a statin?

Ask your pharmacist. Niacin at higher doses can interact with statins, and the label tells you to consult a physician.
