Vitamins01
Which vitamins are in Protoflow?
Two: vitamin E at 13 mg and niacin at 75 mg per serving.
Vitamin E is 87% of the daily value, and niacin is 469%. Niacin is above the 35 mg upper limit for supplements (NIH ODS, Niacin), and vitamin E in high doses has been linked to more prostate cancer in the SELECT trial, although Protoflow's dose is far lower (NIH ODS, Vitamin E). Both are covered in their own pages in the ingredient guide.
Herbs02

| Ginkgo | 120 mg | Circulation, memory |

| Tribulus | 120 mg | Libido, vitality |
| Catuaba | 84.5 mg | Vitality |
| Saw palmetto | 84.5 mg | Urinary and prostate |
| Oat straw | 32 mg | Tonic |
| Cayenne | 20 mg | Circulation |
| Inosine | 50 mg | Energy (a nucleoside) |
Saw palmetto03
What does the research say about saw palmetto?
The largest trials found it no better than placebo for urinary symptoms of BPH.
NCCIH says saw palmetto probably does not help BPH symptoms (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto). The label gives 84.5 mg and no extract type, a small amount next to trial doses. It is the best known prostate herb in the blend and the one with the clearest negative evidence.
Others04
What about the other herbs?
Evidence ranges from some for ginseng to very little for catuaba, damiana and muira puama.
Ginseng has support for erectile function (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng), epimedium evidence is limited (MSK, Epimedium), tribulus is mixed (MSK, Tribulus terrestris), and damiana, muira puama and catuaba lack good human trials (MSK, Damiana) (Drugs.com, Muira Puama) (PMC, Trichilia catigua (catuaba)). Hawthorn is studied for the heart, not the prostate (NCCIH, Hawthorn). None of this is a trial of the blend.
Cautions05
Which ingredients need the most caution?
Niacin, ginkgo, vitamin E and cayenne, for flushing, bleeding and stomach effects.
Ginkgo and vitamin E can affect bleeding (NCCIH, Ginkgo) (NIH ODS, Vitamin E), so blood thinners and surgery need a talk with the doctor. Niacin at 75 mg can flush and strain the liver at high doses (NIH ODS, Niacin). Cayenne can upset the stomach (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)). See the side effects page.
Other ingredients06
What else is in the capsule?
The capsule shell and fillers are rice flour, gelatin, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, maltodextrin, soy protein concentrate and water.
Gelatin is an animal product, so the capsule is not vegan. Soy is an allergen, and maltodextrin is a processed carbohydrate. Some marketing pictures show vegetarian and filler-free badges, which sit uneasily with this list. We list the mismatch as a point to confirm with the seller.
Not stated07
What does the label not tell you?
- The form of niacin
- The extract type and ratio for each herb
- The plant part used
- The manufacturer and the factory
- Any test results for the lot
These gaps mean that research on a herb in general cannot be applied neatly to this product.
Choosing08
How should you use this list when deciding?
Check each line against your health, your medicines and your goals, and drop the product if any line is a problem.
A man on a blood thinner has a reason to avoid ginkgo and vitamin E. A man with a soy allergy has a reason to avoid the capsule. A man who flushes easily has a reason to worry about the niacin. The list is long, so the chance that something on it matters to you is real. Take ten minutes with a pharmacist before you order, and bring the page.
Bottom line09
What is the bottom line on the ingredients?
A familiar herbal blend with two vitamins, a big niacin dose and several unanswered questions.
Read each line on its own page and ask the seller about the gaps before you order.
