Protoflow Damiana: 200 mg and the Evidence Behind It
Protoflow lists 200 mg of damiana per serving. Damiana is a shrub from Central America used traditionally as a mood and libido tonic. Human evidence is very limited, and one concern is that it may lower blood sugar, so men with diabetes should ask a doctor first.

What it is01
What is damiana?
A small shrub of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean whose leaves are made into teas, tinctures and capsules.
The brand pack shows a yellow damiana flower among small green leaves. Traditional use is as a mild stimulant, a mood lifter and an aphrodisiac. The label lists 200 mg and does not say how the leaf was processed, so we cannot tell if it is powder or extract.
Research02
What does research say?
There are few human studies, and none strong enough to support a claim for prostate or sexual health.
NCCIH and other reviews note a lack of reliable clinical trials for damiana (MSK, Damiana). A small trial of a mixed product containing damiana reported better sexual satisfaction in women, but a mixed product cannot show what a single herb does. In men, we found no trials for damiana alone.
Dose03
How does 200 mg compare with usual amounts?
Teas and capsules often supply 2 to 4 g of leaf a day, so 200 mg is a small amount by that standard.
That may be a point in favour of safety, and a point against any effect. In a blend, small amounts of many herbs are common, and they are often present to put names on the label. Without a trial of the combination, there is no way to say what 200 mg adds.
At a glance04
What do we know in short?
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Mood, libido, mild stimulant |
| Human trials | Very few; none for damiana alone in men (MSK, Damiana) |
| Amount in Protoflow | 200 mg, form not stated |
| Main caution | May lower blood sugar |
Blood sugar05
Why does blood sugar matter?
Animal studies suggest damiana may lower blood sugar, so men with diabetes or on diabetes medicine should be careful.
A herb with a glucose-lowering effect could add to insulin or tablets and cause low blood sugar, with sweating, shaking and confusion. Human data are lacking, which is exactly why a pharmacist should look at the combination. Check your blood sugar more often at the start if your doctor agrees.
Never stop a drug for this. Tell each prescriber about the capsules.
Safety06
What other cautions apply?
Large amounts have been linked to seizures-like effects in old case reports, and the herb is not recommended in pregnancy.
Protoflow's 200 mg is far from those amounts. Even so, the herb is poorly studied, and it sits in a blend with ginseng and cayenne, which are stimulating. If you notice jitteriness, a racing heart or trouble sleeping, stop and ask a doctor. Avoid it before surgery.
Mood07
Does it help mood or stress?
The tradition says so, but we found no reliable human trial.
A calming cup of tea can feel good for many reasons, and the leaf may have mild effects. A feeling of ease is not a measured result. If stress or low mood affects your sleep or your sex life, a doctor can help, and the problem may be treatable in ways that a supplement cannot match.
Questions08
What should you ask the seller about damiana?
Ask whether the leaf is powder or extract, where it was grown and whether the lot was tested for contaminants.
Herbal products can carry heavy metals, pesticides or the wrong plant. A brand that tests each lot can show a certificate of analysis. The label cites a reference number, which is a start, but we have not seen the document. Write to [email protected] and ask for it before you rely on the product.
Bottom line09
What is the bottom line on damiana?
A traditional herb in a small amount, with no solid human evidence and a possible effect on blood sugar.
It is one more reason to ask your pharmacist about the whole blend.

Does damiana lower blood sugar?
Animal studies suggest it may. Men with diabetes should ask a doctor.
Is damiana safe?
It appears safe in small amounts, but data are poor, and it is not advised in pregnancy.
Is there proof that damiana supports prostate health?
No trials show that it does.
