Protoflow Chinese Ginseng: 120 mg and Evidence
Protoflow lists 120 mg of Chinese ginseng per serving. NCCIH says oral Asian ginseng seems to improve erectile function in some men, and evidence for other uses is weaker. Ginseng can affect blood sugar, interact with warfarin and cause sleeplessness, so ask a pharmacist if you take medicine.

What it is01
What is Chinese ginseng?
The root of Panax ginseng, a plant used in East Asian medicine for centuries as an energy and vitality tonic.
The brand pack shows pale ginseng roots on a wooden board. Chinese ginseng is usually the same species as Korean or Asian ginseng, and it differs from American ginseng and from Siberian ginseng, which is another plant. The label does not say whether the capsule holds powder, extract or red steamed root.
Dose02
How much is in a serving?
120 mg per serving, which is lower than the 200 to 400 mg of standardized extract often used in studies.
Studies of erectile function used about 600 to 1,000 mg of root powder, three times a day, in many cases (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng). At 120 mg of an unspecified form, Protoflow supplies much less than that. So the human evidence cannot be carried over to the product with any confidence.
Research03
What does NCCIH say?
That oral Asian ginseng seems to improve sexual function in men with erectile dysfunction, with some limits on the quality of trials.
NCCIH adds that evidence for energy, cognition, diabetes and heart disease is weaker or mixed, and that long-term safety is not clear (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng). There is no trial showing that ginseng helps BPH symptoms or night-time urination. So ginseng is the line with the best-supported claim, and that claim is not about the prostate.
At a glance04
How strong is each claim?
| Claim | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Erectile function | Some trial support (NCCIH, Asian Ginseng) |
| Energy and fatigue | Mixed |
| Blood sugar | Mixed; may lower |
| BPH or urinary flow | No trials found |
Blood sugar05
Why is blood sugar a concern?
Ginseng may lower blood sugar, so men with diabetes should check before using it.
Combined with insulin or tablets, an extra drop could cause low blood sugar, with sweating, shaking and confusion. Damiana may do the same. Blood sugar is worth checking more often at the start, if your doctor agrees. Tell the diabetes team about all of the capsules.
Warfarin06
What about blood thinners?
Ginseng may reduce the effect of warfarin, and the blend also has ginkgo and vitamin E, which can raise bleeding risk.
Those effects pull in opposite directions, which makes monitoring harder. Men on warfarin should not add this blend without the prescriber's agreement and an INR plan. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask.
Capsules never stand in for a drug. Share the label with your doctor.
Side effects07
What side effects are reported?
Sleeplessness, headache, nervousness, digestive upset and, rarely, high or low blood pressure.
Insomnia is the usual complaint, which is why some men take ginseng in the morning. Protoflow also holds cayenne and niacin, which can add to the warm, restless feeling in sensitive people. If you notice a pounding heart or poor sleep, note it in your diary and stop if it persists.
Who should skip08
Who should avoid ginseng?
- People with hormone-sensitive conditions, without a doctor's advice
- People with bleeding disorders or about to have surgery
- People on warfarin or diabetes drugs, unless supervised
- Anyone with a history of mania or severe insomnia
If you are in any group above, ask your doctor first.
Bottom line09
What is the bottom line on ginseng in Protoflow?
It is the herb with the best human evidence, but for erections and not for the prostate, and at a lower dose than the studies.
Count it as a real but modest line, and respect the cautions. If you want to test it, do so for six weeks with a diary, and tell your doctor, pharmacist and any surgeon that the capsules contain ginseng, ginkgo and vitamin E together.
